The encoding and searching of Chemical Markush Structure searches has received little attention in the literature of late. We have recently developed a language and associated software for the encoding and searching of Markush structures such as those found in chemical patents. We will describe the system and demonstrate its application to the extraction of structure-activity relationships from a chemical patent by way of a Free-Wilson-style analysis based on the Markush structure and the chemical structures and associated activities disclosed in an example patent.
